Appalled...!

Mon Sep 15, 2008, 12:50 PM
Okay. Let me apologize for the rant up front.

So, I've been looking to get myself some more steady graphic/web design type work over the last few weeks. Something that would be a little more consistent than illustration work has been lately.

I've been following several forums (dA included) and answering ads for that type of work. I came across a promising ad looking for a regular type graphic designer and I thought to myself - "hey, this sounds interesting!" So I looked a little further. Went through a long application process, jumped through a couple hoops, submitted my portfolio, resume, references, etc.

All is good, I think. I get an email saying that my work is a little too "D&D, medieval" for them. I find this highly confusing, as I did not submit an illustration portfolio. So, I inquired as to what they were actually looking at? The variety of graphic/web design material I sent or my illustration portfolio, which honestly had nothing to do with job (and I didn't submit, outside of showing that I am, indeed, an artist). She never says.

I get an email back from the potential employer saying she "had her assistant" look at my stuff again and apparently, I didn't do ANY of it and that they were looking for somebody who had some artistic ability as opposed to somebody that was just selecting colors and text (as their design work) and that she could do that herself. If I can't answer simple questions, I'm not for them. Thank you for your time and effort.

I am just appalled. Obviously, I want nothing to do with these people, but I still have NO idea what the hell they were looking at. I was extremely clear in the web design portfolio links I sent them and to actually be told that I didn't do my own work? I just can not believe it. Not to mention, what simple questions are we referring to?

Let me assure you, lady, I do my own work. Had you bothered to follow-up on any of the references I sent, they would back this up 100%. Just look my name up online and you'll find a variety of sources that more or less prove that I am who I am.

The audacity! I still can't believe that bullshit.

That sucks. :shakefish: It's a shame when companies can't get their acts together.

If you want something different, do something different. Only a crazy person keeps repeating the same thing and expects different results!

Huh - I can't think of any explanation for that either. It's just totally bizarre.

On the bright side, you'd probably not want to work for a company that insane ... but it's still a pain to be accused of plagiarizing your own work or some such. :(

Wow that's horrible. Either they are really disorganized, and mixed you up with someone else or they have a terrible Human Resources Department (or both). It's terrible you had to spend all that time just to be told something like that!

You're so hot you cause global warming!

Man, all I gotta say about graphic design stuff is that you gotta be at the right place at the right time. I've been hunting for jobs in just about every field I'm qualified in, but I keep getting graphic design opportunities which I have next to no qualifications. I don't know what event productions are like where you are, but they're where I've gotten most of my work. I'd like to see your graphic design portfolio out of curiosity, maybe I could learn something and pass it on to people I know.

I flirt with fine art. She tells me that she's not that kind of girl, and I tell her that's because she needs one more drink.

Opinions are not reflex actions.

I wouldn't just let it lie at this.

I would make it clear that you did do your own work and make it clear that they may need a new assistant if THEY can't answer simple questions and/or clearly and accurately access said applicants. Tell them as a professional that is highly qualified and certainly able to do the work they are looking for in a timely and professional manner you find it highly offensive that they would suggest you plagiarized or misrepresented yourself.

Then I'd thank THEM for their time and effort to make it clear that they are the ones that missed out, not you.

Either that or I'd tell them to fuck smooth off.

Your call.

time to name the company as a warning to other artist not to apply

Art is only 5% talent and 95% sweat, work, frustration and tears
it just comes down to how bad you want it that's all

Unfortunately the people that I've had to deal with when doing graphic design are just as stupid. I will communicate in a clear, professional manner and get responses like they half-read or didn't really look at what I sent them. People are odd.
:iconvrm1979:
bah! Don't worry about them, you are a great artist and you can find a good job, just keep on looking for a job. I must add that it's their loss, not yours ;)
:iconangelicadonis:
With your talent man you don't need to worry about those small timers. As my grandpa would say "phuck em'"
:icond-mac:
I hate stuff like that. People who say or do stuff so ridiculous that you're just dumbfounded.

It eats away at your sanity a little, like reading the Necronomicon...
