Agents...

Mon Sep 22, 2008, 8:44 AM
So...

I've been thinking a lot lately about my career and what I want to do. I really do love what I do and I want to be in a position to do this the rest of my life. The last few weeks have been kind of hard though - seems a lot of work has dried up (both illustration and web design) and it's been frustrating trying to figure out what to do next. To the point that I've been contemplating a part-time job for a while. Ugh.

Anyway, I sent out some inquiries to several artist agency's late last week. Predominately companies that rep children's book artists - a direction I would like to personally move in. Does anybody have much experience with an artist rep? I know how hard it is to actually get a rep, so I don't have very high hopes. If I don't hear anything within two weeks, I'll have to expand my search a bit.

The idea, though, is that with a rep I may be able to get my work in front of some young adult book publishers (most of which won't take unsolicited portfolios). I've always wanted a chance to do some cover work for young adult or childrens books and this seems the best way to move in that direction.

I might have to buckle down and make some new samples, we'll see.

Commissions
I'm always happy to talk commissions. I don't have a set price for anything because each piece is unique and poses a new set of issues. What you can count on is that a piece with an extensive background or multiple figures will be more expensive. Color too. Just PM me details and we'll talk it over.

(I have been wanting to do some superhero type stuff, but it's hard to find the time between paying work to just do it for fun. So, if you are wanting something along those lines, I would be willing to consider a discount. Just PM me and we can talk.)

For Sale
Most of the artwork I've posted is for sale. Most pieces have a price listed in the description. If there is no price, shoot me a PM and we'll talk (as I may have missed putting it up or it may not be available).

Prints
Just about all of my color work is available as a print. All prints are signed and dated and run $15 per print or two for $25. That includes shipping and handling.

JerMohler isn't enough of a show boater to say it himself but 2 prints for 25 dollars for his level of work is a very good deal.

I've been considering the agent route lately myself. I haven't been getting enough freelance lately either and it's my own fault. After nearly 30 years of this, I'm tired of constantly seeking new work. And at this point I would be willing to share my income with an agent.

Lemme know how it goes and best of luck with it!

Wow, I've been having the same conversation with myself. The only thing is that I have one really good gig, but it's taking for freaking ever to get green lit so I can start working. I may look into the rep thing once the future job nears an end around June. Keep us updated!

Dont suppose you know (of) Todd Lockwood? I know he went through the same thing as you, spending years doing art for magazine adds when he really wanted to do fantasy art. But he kept going to conventions and doing art for fantasy novels and now has pretty well established himself. You, like all young professionals (Myself included) just need to endure the rough patches, but opportunity will knock sooner or later, and in the most unusual place. So in sum, hang in there man!
:iconjermohler:
Hahaha...of course I know of Todd Lockwood! I hear ya, endure the rough patches. Just part of the game. Thanks!
